Influential Factors of the Audience’s Understanding Dead Poets Society is a 1989 American drama film that tells the story of an English teacher, Mr. Keating, who inspires his students through his teaching of poetry. The film received critical acclaim, and was a box office success. It won the BAFTA Award for Best Film and Cà ©sar Award and David di Donatello Award for Best Foreign Film (British Board of Film Classification, 2014). However, people still hold different opinions on it. Viewers have different, or even extremely opposite film reviews, illustrating that a viewer’s personal situation may influence his or her thoughts over the meaning of the same text or film. Why do these differences exist? What are the main factors? When watching a film, viewers easily connect with some characters that resonate with them. It might be because the personality of the viewer and the characters are similar, or they have similar experiences and feelings. This kind of resonance cau ses different feelings for the same film—people are more likely to agree with characters they prefer, and disagree with other characters. The divergence in opinion between Kevin J. H. Dettmar and Sarfraz Manzoor on Dead Poets Society is one such example.
